How Legendary Schematics work

A Legendary Schematic permanently unlocks the best-tier recipe for its item the moment it enters your inventory or base storage. It is not consumed by crafting, so once the recipe is unlocked you can craft as many copies as you have materials for at the listed workbench.

That means a schematic is a one-time unlock, not a stack of single-use blueprints. Duplicates have exactly one use: feeding the Drafting Table to build a higher rarity, which the sections below explain.

02

What a 3% drop rate really means

Every attempt is an independent roll and there is no pity timer, so a low rate never "builds up" toward a guaranteed drop. At 3% you need about 23 attempts for even odds and about 76 attempts to be 90% confident of at least one drop. The table converts each common rate into the attempts for a coin-flip and for near-certainty.

Capture and butcher: two rolls per Alpha

Catch the Alpha Pal instead of killing it, then butcher it at your base with a Meat Cleaver. Butchering rolls the same drop table again, which doubles your chance per encounter. This works for the 24 field Alphas covered here.

Tower Raid bosses cannot be captured, so those are single kill-rolls with no butcher follow-up. Field Alphas respawn at in-game dawn once you leave the spawn area; sleeping past 10PM in-game cycles the Alpha back in about 5 real minutes.

04

The Drafting Table upgrade path

The Drafting Table unlocks at Level 45 for 4 Ancient Technology Points. It combines 5 schematics of the same item and same rarity into 1 schematic of the next rarity up.

The math rarely favors it. An Assault Rifle Legendary straight from its Alpha at 3% averages about 33 kills. Farming 5 Epic copies from the Level 55 oil rig chest at 0.167% each to feed the table averages nearly 3,000 chest opens, roughly 90x slower. Always check the lower tier's own rate before routing through the table, because a cheap lower tier can make it worthwhile while an expensive one makes it a trap.

05

Tower Raid Bosses

4 items

New to 1.0. Eight raid bosses drop 10% chance schematics, including four weapons that don't appear anywhere else and three Ancient Armor variants. This roll only happens on your first-ever clear of each tower. Rematches are unlimited and free, but reward experience only, not another shot at the schematic.

06

Ancient Tier

5 items

Ancient Helm and Ancient Armor come from Astral Mountain dungeon sources. The Heat-Resistant, Cold-Resistant, and Lightweight variants are Tower Raid boss drops instead, at 5% and 10%.

07

Moon Lord

4 items

Tides of Terraria's raid boss. All four schematics drop at 25% on Master difficulty, or from the Sealed Realm of Terraria dungeon's end-reward chests at a far lower rate.

08

Alpha Pal Drops: Weapons

16 items

Sixteen weapons drop from field Alpha Pals at a base 3% rate. Catch and butcher for a second roll per encounter.

09

Alpha Pal Drops: Armor

8 items

Eight armor pieces from the same Alpha Pal pool, also at 3%.

Oil Rig Chests

8 items

Three rigs, tiered by level (30, 55, 60). The Level 60 rig is the main endgame source; the Level 55 rig has overlapping content at lower rates. Chests are guaranteed to spawn; the schematic roll inside is not.

11

Dungeon and Treasure Box Sources

44 items

Biome-specific chests, fishing, NPC vendors, and Enemy Camp rewards. Most items here have multiple listed sources; all are shown, not just the best one. Excalibur and the five Hallowed items are cross-checked against the Tides of Terraria dungeon's complete loot table; 0.011% is genuinely the only path.

12

Vendor Purchases

6 items

No RNG. Three from the Arena Shop for Battle Tickets, two from the Medal Merchant for Dog Coins, plus the Marksman Revolver and Core Eject Shotgun for Battle Tickets.

13

Arena First Clear

1 item

One schematic is a guaranteed one-time reward, not a repeatable drop.

14

Vendor (Common) + Drafting Table Upgrade

22 items

These 22 hat and crown schematics are sold at Common tier by regional Wandering Merchants. Reaching Legendary requires the Drafting Table's 5:1 upgrade, four times over: Common to Uncommon, Uncommon to Rare, Rare to Epic, Epic to Legendary. No RNG involved, just merchant stock and Drafting Table materials.

15

No Listed Source

2 items

Two schematics have no listed drop source, chest source, or vendor anywhere checked. Crafting cost is confirmed; acquisition is not. Both carry an unusual Rank 999 designation internally, versus Rank 1 on every other schematic, which may explain the gap.

16

Quest-Only

1 item

Not farmable. Obtained once through a quest delivery.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the same Legendary Schematic twice?

Yes. Once the recipe is unlocked, duplicate schematics have exactly one use: feeding the Drafting Table to build a higher rarity. They are never needed to keep crafting the item you already unlocked.

Do Alpha Pals respawn?

Yes. Field Alpha Pals respawn at in-game dawn once you leave the spawn area. Sleeping past 10PM in-game cycles the Alpha back in about 5 real minutes, so you can farm the same drop table repeatedly.

Is the Drafting Table worth it?

Yes when Epic duplicates are already stacking up from another farm. It is not worth farming a lower tier specifically to feed it unless that lower tier has a friendly rate, so check the lower tier drop rate before committing.

Why do some items have no listed source?

Their item records list only a crafting cost and no drop or vendor source. Both carry an internal Rank 999 flag against the Rank 1 on everything else, so they are reported exactly as the data shows rather than guessed at.

Are the Arena Shop and Medal Merchant schematics limited-time?

No. Both vendors are permanent, so their schematics can be bought at any point in the run once you can reach and afford them.
